Statewide Broadcast by His Excellency Seyi Makinde

My Dear Good People of Oyo State,

The past few weeks’ events have made it imperative that I address issues that have to do with the internal security of our dear state. Barely a week ago, I had cause to call out members of the press who were allowing themselves to be used to stoke ethnic tensions among the good people of Oyo State. There have been stories in the press targeted at exaggerating the security situation in the state.

However, we cannot overlook the fact that there have indeed been instances that cause concern. The fragile peace between the herdsmen and farmers in Oke Ogun is being threatened. Individuals who are not authorised are going around chasing people from their homes and causing mayhem. This assault on residents of Oyo State is not the way to further the Yoruba cause.

Let me state that we shall not sit back and watch anyone make any law-abiding resident of Oyo State feel unsafe in their homes, farms, or business places. We are aware of some people circulating flyers and giving people ultimatums to leave their land. This is totally unacceptable and will not be condoned.

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), which I swore to defend and protect, guarantees freedom of movement in Section 41(1), such that citizens are free to reside in any part of the country without fear. We are determined to preserve that right in Oyo State.

Therefore, I am calling on any individuals or groups planning to take any actions that would lead to the forcible removal of anyone from Oyo State to desist from taking such actions. Any persons who fail to abide by this directive will face the full wrath of the law.

All Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairpersons are directed to work with the traditional rulers and the officers of the security agencies to ensure that peace is maintained in all parts of the state. Let me also use this medium to speak to our traditional rulers. They must not be part of any plans to disrupt the peaceful coexistence of residents of Oyo State.

I must reiterate that we will not hesitate to take appropriate action against any individuals who try to disrupt the peace in Oyo State. Our administration is taking all necessary steps to protect the good people of Oyo State from harassment, thuggery and banditry. We believe we have the situation under control.

It is time for us to come together and put the interests of our state first. We have a common enemy. That enemy is not the Hausa Fulani who is looking for pasture for his flock. It is not the farmer who just wants to grow food to sell in the market or to feed his family. Our enemies are the hoodlums, cultists, armed robbers, kidnappers and bandits.

These people live among us.

We have constitutionally empowered people who will arrest and prosecute these criminals. Our job, as active citizens, is to help them where we can to identify these enemies. Report any criminals and criminal activities you are privy to and let the authorities take action. If you see something, say something.

I must acknowledge the efforts of some officers of the Nigeria Police Force who have resumed their constitutional duties of maintaining law and order in our state. I encourage the leadership of the Police to continue to collaborate with our administration to secure Oyo State.

With our collective efforts, we can continue to keep the peace in Oyo State. Together, we can preserve the secure environment that has contributed to the growth of our economy.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Long Live Oyo State.

~ Governor Seyi Makinde, January 20, 2021

  1. Seyi just passed simply message to Sunday Igbo. And I considered it a word of wisdom in order to maintain peace in the state. My advice to Sunday Igbo is to get lawyer and take the Seriki hausa to court and to key to the yoruba adage that says maja masa la n mo akinkanju logun.

  2. Baba, as your number one fan and defendant, pls don’t fall our hand on this matter. Please close one eye and allow them chase these crime albeit people outta our land. Enough is enough. There 1001 things a Yorùbá man dares not do in their towns that they’re comfortably doing here.
Unless they’re ready to leak the secrets of their fellow Fulani tormenting the lives and properties in our land.

Please o, I’m begging. Make these opposition no get points to dey tackle us

    Thank you

  3. You have always won my heart with your administration decisions but this will really hurt majority of the indigenous people of your State because you letting all to know that a trybe has a monopoly of crimes and terrorising others even in their domain all in the name of one Nigeria please let the youth also face them if the Federal government can not protect them with their Police then they should be able to protect their territories.

  4. And the governor said;

“If you see something, say something” !

The governor is not seeing what we are seeing.
Can we be wishing our senators and politicians bad ?

Seyi Makinde needs to see something.

I just hope one of them died of this incident. Maybe governor will see clearly then

It’s a pity that our governor isn’t seeing what we are seeing!

  5. I believe Mr Sunday Igboho will let this one pass but there will still be other days. This fulanis will not stop there atrocities.
In my own opinion, I think the Governir is only trying to protect his political career because he can not say he doesn’t know the atrocities this people are venting on the innocent citizens. He should have close one eye and pretend instead of perverting the cause of saving lives and properties by the able individuals. ENI T’OKAN L’OMON. Am sure by the time he or his member of his family would be affected, he will do the right thing. T’OWO OMODE KOBA TIBA EKU IDA, KI BERE IKU T’OPA BABA E. The governor is only waiting for 2023 to come and go.

  6. Eni to nilu, koni fe ko tu. Thank you Sir, Your Excellency. Unarguably, if anyone in the State sees something, he should say something. It is through adequate information and lawful engagement that rifts can be settled. The language and position of the governor are unambiguous and it is through this that peace and tranquility can prevail in the State. Oyo leads by example. A o fe ija loyo.

  7. Its so unfortunate that these deadly bandits, terrorist or whatever sweet name its being given by thier sponsors (fed govt) governor Makinde should not bow to thier lies and deciets. Stand for your people and wipe out these terrorist once and for all and let your people have confidence on you as a man that can stand for them.

  8. Your Excellency we are disappointed in you for this. What positive measure as the securities taken ever since this kidnappers as been killing and kidnapping making people feel unsafe in there homes?
Now the Indigenes wants to liberate themeself from dredded Fulani’s you are treating them.
Let know which part you belong please.

  9. My governor though I understand your position I do not want your government to be rubbish by any group of people and the enemy of good governance, but this issue of security must be tackle seriously, Yoruba ki se eru enikan in our own land, be courageous, God will give you the wisdom you need.
